To job seekers feeling lost in their search – it’s time to take back control.
If we’ve learned anything while writing Job Boards You Can Love – a targeted search goes a long way to landing your dream gig. Niche job boards are the matchmakers for your career, and they connect you with the best and the brightest companies that are only found sometimes off the beaten path.
While large job boards encourage playing out your job hunt like it’s a numbers game - niche job boards save you time and energy by making sure there is a good fit. Speaking with the passionate leaders of the niche communities we interviewed, we’re convinced job seekers will find better jobs when they include niche job boards in their search.

Welcome to our tenth article in our Job Boards You Can Love series! We are excited to be sharing YouTern, a community sharing Careerleaf’s passion for enabling job seekers to be proactive about their career development.
In this economy, new grads now need more than a shiny new degree to land a job, and clicking ‘Apply Now’ 200 times is no longer an effective way to approach a job search. Launched in the wake of a global problem affecting Gen Y job seekers, YouTern puts the human back into human resources by helping job seekers actually land a job.

Window shop for a company culture that fits you
We started the Job Boards You Can Love series to help introduce job seekers to fun, specialized and niche job boards. The Muse, is another great example of why applying through a niche job board is better.
A daily publication and a job board, The Muse gives job seekers a detailed look inside the hottest companies (Mashable, Tumblr or Pinterest to name a few) with awesome company culture. It was created by former McKinsey consultants, Kathryn, Alex & Melissa, when they realized the web was missing a key resource: smart, honest advice for professionals on what it truly takes to succeed in their career.
"We were all told growing up: ‘do something that you’re passionate about!’" says Melissa McCreery, founder and editor-in-chief at The Daily Muse (content side of The Muse): "and now that we’re in the job market - that is an ideal that everyone in our generation is certainly striving for."
Built for teens by a teen
When most people talk about finding career communities aligned to you, they are often referring to industries or skills like marketing or finance or sales. Teenwork.ca, the next job board in our Job Boards You Can Love series takes a different focus - helping job seekers in a specific age group.
If you are student on a job hunt, your mind might be flooded by a series of mind-boggling questions: is my resume good enough? Do I have enough experience to get hired? And how to find an employer that will let me work around my school schedule? Teenwork.ca, has the answers.
Teen entrepreneur Evelyn Morett, founded Teenwork.ca to specifically help young job seekers looking for part-time and full-time work. “In spring of my last semester of high school, I was looking for a job and I found it really difficult to find one that fit my school schedule and experience,” says Evelyn of her personal job search woes: “I looked around to see if there was anything out there for young people, and there wasn’t – so I saw this need and decided to fill it.”

Help people and gain experience
After a one-week vacation for our Job Boards You Can Love series, we are back with Care.com, another great and unique approach to job boards focused on fostering a community of caregivers and families.
When Founder and CEO Sheila Lirio Marcelo began to experience first hand the heartache of an ailing father, she realized she had a care crisis on her hands. A mother of two, she was now one of the many sandwiched between two generations, and needing help to look after her kids and her parents. Seeing an opportunity to help others facing the same challenges, Sheila created Care.com – “the Match.com for families and caregivers” which attracts over 3.5 million unique visitors in a month. Whether you’re looking for caregiving in the areas of: general housekeeping, child, senior and even pet care – Care.com has you covered.
Managing editor Katie Bugbee summarizes Care.com’s focus as connecting families and caregivers. “We don’t consider ourselves a job board as much as we are a support hub for families,” says Katie – “these are the people that you love the most in your life, and we want to create a match based on your values and personality.”

If you’re a communication-savvy creative, you’ve probably heard of Talent Zoo: the extremely targeted job board for marketing, advertising, digital and creative types, and the next in our series Job Boards You Can Love.
We talked with Amy Hoover, Executive VP at Talent Zoo, who shared with us the evolution and success of the company and her heartfelt advice to job seekers within the industry. While Talentzoo.com was launched in 2001, Talent Zoo the company actually began in 1996 as an executive search firm catering exclusively to marketing and advertising industry folk.
Having joined Talent Zoo as a recruiter in 1997, Amy has seen the face of the company change; “In late 1999 and into 2001 there was a mini-recession,” remembers Amy: “the dot com bubble burst and things weren’t as robust in our industry hiring-wise.” Although job boards were still relatively new, the team at Talent Zoo saw employers were posting jobs in addition to using recruiters. Seeing an opportunity, Talent Zoo launched a division to run alongside the executive search side – their very own job board geared to the same audience.
Add real world work experience, one project at a time
This week we had the pleasure of speaking with SpringTern, our fifth Job Board You Can Love that helps combat that age-old Catch-22: “you can’t get a job without experience, but you can’t get experience without a job.”
SpringTern gives students a head start on improving their resume even before they enter the professional realm. Created by Ben and Ron, two former business school students who know what it’s like to have trouble breaking into the workforce: SpringTern gives Gen Y the leg up needed to succeed out in the real world.
Instead of the traditional job postings you’d see on any other site - SpringTern features exclusive project-based opportunities with small businesses to larger brand names. With internships that range from 5 to 200 hundred hours, students can add real work experience to their resume while managing a full-time course load at the same time.
"We solve a very real need for young job seekers," says Ben earnestly: "when I think back to my undergrad I remember having a lot of trouble because I didn’t have any relevant experience against a lot of people that did."
Thriving community of seasonal workers
As the season turns from summer to autumn in the northern hemisphere, our fourth Job Board You Can Love gets busy with job seekers taking a more seasonal job approach. Cool Works focuses on helping you get Jobs in Great Places®.
Are you an adventurous and outdoorsy job seeker looking for work that’s off the beaten path?
Cool Works – An American hub for seasonal employment welcomes everyone and anyone who’s ever wanted to work at a ski resort, a national park, a ranch – anywhere your office doesn’t necessarily include four walls. When it comes to the Cool Works job seeker, there’s nothing wrong with being a seasonal worker – in fact, they not only celebrate it but give you all the tools you need to succeed!
